My best friend’s mother had passed away, and I could tell that she was intensely heartbroken. She had lost an excessive amount of weight in just two weeks due to a loss of appetite, which made her barely eat anything, citing that food didn’t taste good anymore.
During her mother’s funeral, she was so skinny and pale that relatives who hadn’t seen her in only a few months almost couldn’t recognize her. Everyone kept encouraging her to eat even if the food didn’t taste good, but she refused.
It was the second day of the funeral when I noticed that she was fatigued, and I offered her a seat to rest. I gave her a piece of a snack and begged her to eat, but she refused.
Her grandma and aunt approached her, and they told her that if she didn’t eat, then they were going to have someone take her home because it wasn’t safe for her to be there. When I heard this, I thought it was weird, but I didn’t think much of it as I continued encouraging her to eat some snacks.
Hearing someone might take her home, my friend grabbed the snack from my hand and took a bite. She whispered that she would go stay with her mom and quickly got up from her seat. She took several steps and tripped on the floor, fell over, and collapsed.
We all rushed over to check on her to ensure she was okay. It seemed like she had fainted due to fatigue from not eating. Everyone stood around her as she slowly came back to her senses and asked if she knew where she was and if she remembered what had just happened. She was able to answer all of our questions but said that she doesn’t remember tripping over and falling.
As she recovered, she insisted she go to the front to stay with her mother. The moment she faced the front, she let out a scream of terror and started to back up as she pointed towards the coffin. Everyone scrambled to calm her down and figure out what was happening.
A moment later, she fainted again. This time, her relatives called 911, and an ambulance came and took her to the hospital.
I didn’t hear from her for two weeks after this happened. When I finally got a chance to connect with her, I took the opportunity to find out. She told me that after regaining consciousness from fainting, all she wanted to do was be by her mother’s side. When she made her way up to the front, she looked up and saw her dead mother in her burial outfit sitting on top of the coffin, gesturing for her to walk over. Terrified by what she saw, she fainted again, and that was the last thing she remembered.
After she was released from the hospital, her family did a ceremony and supposedly found out that her dead mother was trying to take her. Supposedly, she didn’t trip and fall on her own at the funeral; her mother grabbed her foot and made her fall. Because of that, her family had to hide her from her mother and gave her a new name.
I was shocked to hear this since I’d never heard of such a thing before. She explained to me that if you trip or fall at a funeral, it’s a bad omen and that the deceased person is probably trying to take you with them! Spooky!
